On February 27, 2001, New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission announced that it had "calendared" the Dorothy Day Historic Site.

Existing Cottages are in green. Site of former Dorothy Day Cottage is in purple.
Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair Jennifer Raab began the meeting by calling the demolition of the cottages an "extreme tragedy."
Staten Island Commission Member and Vice Chair Pablo Vengoechea noted the social, historic, cultural, and educational importance of the site and said that the importance goes beyond the demolished structures.
